Case study · fully anonymised

An inconspicuous download. Long undetected. A decisive finding.

A small anomaly led to a deeper analysis. Only by connecting different system information did it become clear what had happened in the background and which measures were actually needed.

In short

What does this case study show?

The case study shows how solbytech recognised a security incident in an initially unclear anomaly found during a security assessment, reconstructed the possible course of events, assessed the risk honestly and contained the incident. This led to concrete improvements in logging, detection and response. The case is fully anonymised and based on real project experience.

Fully anonymised and based on real project experience: no client, industry, location, time frame or technical identifiers.

The case in five stages

  1. 01 · The entry point

    An application that seems harmless

Someone in the company needs a particular application for their daily work and downloads it from an unverified source. The installation completes and the program works. No warning, no outage, nothing unusual.

  2. 02 · The invisible trace

    Something settles in the background

The installation creates mechanisms that remain active after a restart. Protective functions are changed and obfuscated commands are executed. This creates the possibility of reading out information or preparing further steps in the network.

In everyday work, none of this is noticed.

  3. 03 · The decisive finding

An entry that does not fit

During a later security assessment, we come across an unusual entry. On its own, it is not conclusive – it could also be a faulty application.

Only by connecting different system information and the available logs does it become clear: this is a security-relevant incident.

  4. 04 · Analysis and measures

    Connecting traces, reconstructing the course

We examine the available traces and reconstruct the possible course of events. We check

    • how the entry happened,
    • which mechanisms were set up on the system,
    • which protective functions were changed,
    • whether similar traces exist on other systems,
    • which accounts or sessions could be affected,
    • what can no longer be determined clearly for lack of historical data.

A possible data outflow can neither be confirmed nor ruled out in retrospect. We say so openly – and this uncertainty is reflected in the measures.

The affected workstation is isolated and rebuilt in a controlled way. Credentials and existing sessions are reset, and other systems are checked for similar anomalies.

  5. 05 · From incident to improvement

    More visibility, clearer paths

The analysis results in concrete improvements, implemented or recommended:

    • better logging of security-relevant events,
    • more targeted monitoring of unusual system activity,
    • clearer processes for installing new software,
    • better detection of changes to protective mechanisms,
    • defined response paths for future anomalies.

Result

From a single trace to a clear security decision

The specific incident is contained. At the same time, gaps in visibility, detection and response have been identified and deliberately reduced.

The company now has not only a cleaned-up system but a sound basis for its next security decisions. Nobody promises complete security – but every decision is traceable.
